The last thing you want is to not feel safe at your own apartment. Whether you signed a lease for three months, six months, or an entire year, your safety should be your biggest concern. Here are some tips for staying safe and comfortable at your apartment complex.
Check doors and windows
Before signing a lease agreement, double-check that all locks on doors and windows work properly. It doesn’t matter if you are on ground level or the third level — functional locks are a must for every tenant.
Another thing worth mentioning regarding doors is that your landlord is responsible for changing the locks. If they haven’t been changed since the previous tenant for whatever reason, talk to your landlord right away. You don’t want someone you don’t know having access to your apartment.
Meet the neighbors
It’s never a bad idea to spend some time with your neighbors soon after moving into your own apartment. Though we’re aren’t saying you have to be best friends with the people you live next to, we are suggesting that being friendly with these people can be beneficial for your safety. Good neighbors look after each other and are always aware of anything that looks suspicious.
Get a dog
Believe it or not, a four-legged friend does a better job of keeping potential intruders away than a home security system. It’s almost as though dogs have a six sense when it comes to detecting trouble. Just remember to choose a pet-friendly apartment complex that won’t have a problem with Fido.
Keep your unit well-lit
Burglars usually target homes and apartments that are dark. By leaving the lights on when you head out for the evening, you give the impression that someone is home. It might be worth asking your apartment complex if they have their exterior lights on a timer so that you don’t have to worry about leaving lights on yourself.
Purchase renters insurance
Unfortunately, you can do all of the above and still have your unit broken into while you’re gone. That’s why we suggest opting for renters insurance from a reputable company. Read “Why You Should Invest in Renters Insurance” for more information.
